Bite Size Goals


Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could do an Ironman triathlon. I thought my first 5K was a pretty big deal! But spectating at an Ironman event made me see that anyone could do it. Grandparents, school teachers, and average-looking dudes like me. 

So how did I go from a 5K to 140.6 miles? How do we humans make that leap? We start by realizing that if we can bike ten miles this weekend, then we could bike eleven miles next weekend. It’s really that simple. You break it down into small, attainable goals and focus on one week at a time.

It’s the same with quitting smoking. If today you had ten cigarettes, tomorrow have nine. It’s the way we make ourselves better at anything. Make a small goal. An easy goal. And nail it! Then set another one.

When overcoming adversity, you only need to make it through today. And if you can make it through today, then you can make it through tomorrow. This builds momentum and confidence. Add those little 2.5 pound plates to the barbell – not the big ones. True in the gym and in life.

Are You CMR?


Combat Mission Ready means you’re squared away in every category. You’re qualified, proficient, and healthy. Your medical, dental, financial, and legal affairs are all in order. You’re ready to go anywhere and accomplish the mission.

As men, we need to be CMR when it comes to leading our family, too. This means being squared away when it comes to eating healthy and exercising regularly. Financially, it means spending less money than we make and investing our savings wisely. And relationally it means taking your wife on regular dates so that your kids see what a healthy marriage looks like. 

Airlines tell us to put our own oxygen mask on before helping others. That’s good advice for life. You cannot lead your family to a place that you’ve never been yourself.

Running yourself ragged around your kids’ overly-busy schedule is not setting a healthy example. That’s like the pilot running around to help all the passengers before putting on his own mask. Taking care of yourself first will actually make you a better husband and father.

Get your health, fitness, finances, and marriage squared away. Only when you’re fully CMR can you effectively lead your family and accomplish any mission.

Waiting Outside


Every good idea I’ve had came to me outside. Einstein had his best ideas while riding his bike. Maybe it’s because we’re designed for outside.

Our minds are relaxed and loose, and free to explode with dreams and ideas when they’re released from the tyranny of smartphones and 24-hour news networks that dictate to us what we should be upset about or who we should be talking about. So many of our daily thoughts are prescribed to us by the needs of our family, the news on our phones, and demands of our jobs.

It’s only when we get alone outside, whether jogging, hiking, or just watching the sunset, that our minds are truly able to think for themselves about what we want to think about. As soon as you step back inside, you’re once again the dad or the husband or the worker. But when you walk alone on the beach or hike a trail there are no more titles, no more politics. Just your feet on the earth and your thoughts in your mind.

Our stressors are indoors. Leave them there and escape. Go outside and discover the creativity and the ideas that your mind has hidden away.
